Google got grammar!

Google is shaking up the way its search engine works. Enter BERT, an algorithm that can recognize the important words in a search, rather than simply treat it as a ‘bag of words’. So rather than treating the word ‘no’ as of equal importance to all the other words in the sentence ‘Where can I find a restaurant that serves no meat?’, it recognizes its significance in guiding the meaning of the entire question. This was done by blanking out words in sentences and asking the AI entity to guess the meaning – then ‘marking’ its responses.
